Why Crunchie?

According the urbandictionary.com crunchy/crunchie is used to describe persons who have adjusted or altered their lifestyle for environmental reasons. Crunchy persons tend to be politically strongly left-leaning and may be additionally but not exclusively categorized as vegetarians, vegans, eco-tarians, conservationists, environmentalists, neo-hippies, tree huggers, nature enthusiasts, etc.
When I read this definition I ask myself if this is me, I can honestly say that some of it is me.  I tend to lean to the left, I am an environmentalist, and I love nature.  I am not a vegetarian or vegan and I do not plan to become one.  I am working on becoming a conservationist and I am bringing my family along with me.

My journey to becoming crunchie began a long time ago, but it has only been in the last few years that I have embraced my crunchie self and truly chosen this path for myself and my family.  I grew up in a more conservative thinking family and I never really fit with that ideology.  The left side of the fence is where I am most comfortable.  Through my teen years and early twenties I was all about being a consumer but I eventually realized that this was not the way I wanted to live.  I began to realize that everything I was buying and using was not made in Canada or even the USA.  It was being made in countries that were no where near where I lived.  I also began to take note of where the my food was coming from and I did not like what I discovered.

In June of 2009 my husband and I were excited to find out that we were expecting our first child.  Becoming pregnant really got me thinking about this little life that I was growing inside me and that in a few short months I would be bringing into this world.  I wanted to be able to offer him or her the absolute best life possible.  Getting pregnant is truly the moment in my life that turned me around and sent me down the crunchie path.  I was all of a sudden on a mission.
